Río Vell ‘Old’ is the name by which the old mouth of the Fluviá river is known. It is located between the municipalities of San Pedro Pescador, La Armentera and La Escala, and occupies an area of about 125 hectares. It is a space that has special interest as a refuge for rare hydrophytes and helophytes in Catalonia. It stands out for being one of the few areas where Rumex hydrolapathum is found and the only area for Carex elata. Other species in the area are the mansega (Cladium mariscus), Stachys palustris and Lysimachia vulgaris. In the past, the hydrocarius (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae) had also been reported in the area.
As for habitats, the following habitats are present: the communities of Salicornia and other annual plants, colonizing saline clay or sandy soils, the embryonic moving dunes and the moving dunes of the coastal range, with barron or reed (Ammophila arenaria).
Regarding the impacts of this space, the wastewater discharges from the adjacent campsite stand out. Furthermore, many areas are heavily filled and some edges are completely devoid of vegetation, since it has been destroyed.
